In 2009, Día, the family literacy program, El día de los niños /El día de los libros, Children's Day / Book Day, will celebrate its 12th anniversary. Our goal is to link all children to books, languages and cultures. On or near April 30th, culminating celebrations of this year-long commitment are held across the country. You'll find information about Día's history plus ideas and links on the Día section of this web site. As a mom, I know that kids are quick to ask, "Why do we have Mother's Day and Father's Day and not Kids' Day?" I love kids and wanted to focus on them, but I also wanted to have books be part of the celebration. As a reader and writer, I know bookjoy. How exciting to now have Book Fiesta to share with readers and audiences.
When I'm not traveling this winter, I'll be corresponding with editors about the other books due out in the near future. Visit the New section for a preview. I'll also be revising a book of letters to teachers, librarians and all who want to nurture their creativity. The collection will be published in 2010.
Wishing you health, happiness and a peaceful world,

Coming in March 2009!
"Hooray! Today is our day, ¡El día de los niños!"
"¡Viva! Hoy es nuestro día. El día de los niños!"
So begins this bilingual celebration to read and share throughout the year and certainly on or near April 30th. I'm thrilled to have a second book illustrated by the talented Rafael López. Such an inventive imagination. See children and families from varied languages and cultures enjoy reading--even in a hot air balloon. The words can be sung or used for choral reading. The book includes an author note about Día and suggested activities for celebrating Día at home, school, libraries, etc.
